ಇಹಲೋಕ ತ್ಯಜಿಸಿದ ಪ್ರಕೃತಿ ತಾಯಿ ಸಾಲುಮರದ ತಿಮ್ಮಕ್ಕ

ಬೆಂಗಳೂರು : ವೃಕ್ಷಮಾತೆ ಎಂದೇ ಹೆಸರಾಗಿದ್ದ ಮತ್ತು ಶತಾಯುಷಿಗಳ ಪಟ್ಟಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಗುರುತಿಸಿಕೊಂಡಿದ್ದ ಸಾಲುಮರದ ತಿಮ್ಮಕ್ಕ ಅವರು ಇಂದು ವಿಧಿವಶರಾಗಿದ್ದಾರೆ.

ಕೆಲವು ದಿನಗಳಿಂದ ಅನಾರೋಗ್ಯದಿಂದ ಬಳಲುತ್ತಿದ್ದ ಅವರನ್ನು ಬೆಂಗಳೂರಿನ ಜಯನಗರದಲ್ಲಿರುವ ಖಾಸಗಿ ಆಸ್ಪತ್ರೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ದಾಖಲಿಸಿ ಚಿಕಿತ್ಸೆ ನೀಡಲಾಗುತ್ತಿತ್ತು. ಸುಮಾರು 114 ವರ್ಷ ಬದುಕಿದ ತಿಮ್ಮಕ್ಕ, ಮಾಗಡಿ ಪ್ರದೇಶದಲ್ಲಿ ರಸ್ತೆ ಬದಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ನೂರಾರು ಗಿಡಗಳನ್ನು ನೆಟ್ಟು ಬೆಳೆಸಿದಕ್ಕಾಗಿ ದೇಶದಾದ್ಯಂತ ಮೆಚ್ಚುಗೆ ಪಡೆದಿದ್ದರು.

ತಿಮ್ಮಕ್ಕ ಅವರಿಗೆ ಸ್ವಂತ ಮಕ್ಕಳಿರಲಿಲ್ಲ.ಆದರೆ ಅವರು ನೆಟ್ಟ ಗಿಡಗಳನ್ನೇ ತಮ್ಮ ಮಕ್ಕಳೆಂದು ಕಾಣುತ್ತಿದ್ದರು. ಪ್ರತಿದಿನವೂ ನೀರು ಹಾಕಿ, ನಿತ್ಯದ ಆರೈಕೆ ನೀಡಿ, ಅವು ದೊಡ್ಡ ಮರಗಳಾಗುವಂತೆ ಪಟ್ಟ ಪ್ರಯತ್ನವೇ ಅವರಿಗೆ “ಸಾಲುಮರದ ತಿಮ್ಮಕ್ಕ” ಎಂಬ ಗೌರವಪೂರ್ಣ ಹೆಸರು ತಂದಿತು.

ಪರಿಸರ ಸಂರಕ್ಷಣೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಅವರ ಅವಿಸ್ಮರಣೀಯ ಸೇವೆಯನ್ನು ಗೌರವಿಸಿ, ಕೇಂದ್ರ ಸರ್ಕಾರವು ಅವರಿಗೆ ಪದ್ಮಶ್ರೀ ಪ್ರಶಸ್ತಿ ನೀಡಿ ಸನ್ಮಾನಿಸಿತ್ತು.ಪ್ರಶಸ್ತಿ ಸ್ವೀಕರಿಸುವ ಸಂದರ್ಭದಲ್ಲಿ ರಾಷ್ಟ್ರಪತಿ ಭವನದಲ್ಲಿ ಆಗಿನ ರಾಷ್ಟ್ರಪತಿ ರಾಮನಾಥ ಕೋವಿಂದರಿಂದ ಅವರು ಆಶೀರ್ವಾದ ಪಡೆದಿದ್ದರು.

Saalumarada Thimmakka, fondly known as the “Mother of Trees” and one of India’s oldest environmental icons, has passed away. She had been undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Jayanagar, Bengaluru, after suffering from age-related health issues. Thimmakka, who lived for about 114 years, rose to national fame for planting and nurturing hundreds of trees along the roadsides near Magadi in Bengaluru Rural district.

Although she had no children of her own, Thimmakka cared for her saplings as if they were her family. Her dedication to watering and protecting the plants every single day earned her the beloved title “Saalumarada Thimmakka.”

In recognition of her extraordinary service to environmental conservation, the Government of India honoured her with the Padma Shri award. During the ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhavan, she received blessings from the then President Ram Nath Kovind.
