ಕುಮಟಾ ತಾಲ್ಲೂಕಿನ ದೇವಗಿರಿ ಗ್ರಾಮ ಪಂಚಾಯತಿ ವ್ಯಾಪ್ತಿಯ ಹೊರಭಾಗದಲ್ಲಿ ಅರಣ್ಯ ಇಲಾಖೆಯ ನಿರ್ಲಕ್ಷ್ಯದ ಪರಿಣಾಮವಾಗಿ, ಎರಡು ದಿನಗಳ ಹಿಂದೆ ಚಿರತೆ ಮರಿಯೊಂದು ಕಾಡು ಹಂದಿ ಹಿಡಿಯಲು ಹಾಕಿದ ಉರುಳಿಗೆ ಸಿಲುಕಿ ಸಾವನ್ನಪ್ಪಿರುವ ಘಟನೆ ಬೆಳಕಿಗೆ ಬಂದಿದೆ.
ಕಳೆದ ಕೆಲ ದಿನಗಳಿಂದ ಈ ಭಾಗದಲ್ಲಿ ಹೆಣ್ಣು ಚಿರತೆಯೊಂದು ತನ್ನ ಮರಿಯೊಂದಿಗೆ ಓಡಾಡುತ್ತಿತ್ತು ಎನ್ನಲಾಗಿದೆ. ಅದೇ ವೇಳೆ, ಕಾಡು ಹಂದಿಗಳು ರೈತರ ಗದ್ದೆಗಳಿಗೆ ನುಗ್ಗಿ ಬೆಳೆ ಹಾನಿ ಮಾಡುತ್ತಿದ್ದು, ಇದನ್ನು ತಡೆಯಲು ಕೆಲವರು ಕಾಡು ಹಂದಿ ಹಿಡಿಯಲು ಉರುಳು ಹಾಕಿದ್ದರೆನ್ನಲಾಗಿದೆ. ಚಿರತೆ ಮರಿ ಈ ಉರುಳಿಗೆ ಸಿಲುಕಿ ಸಾವನ್ನಪ್ಪಿದೆ ಎಂದು ತಿಳಿದು ಬಂದಿದೆ. ಆದರೆ ಅರಣ್ಯ ಇಲಾಖೆಯ ಅಧಿಕಾರಿಗಳು ಮುಳ್ಳಿನ ಬೇಲಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಸಿಲುಕಿ ಸಾವನ್ನಪಿದೆ ಎಂದು ಹೇಳಿಕೊಂಡಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ಆದರೆ ಅವರೆ ಹೇಳುವಂತೆ ಚಿರತೆ ಮರಿ ಮುಳ್ಳಿನ ಬೇಲಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಸಿಲುಕಿ ಸಾವನ್ನಪ್ಪಿರುವುದಾಗಿದ್ದರೆ. ಸತ್ತ ಚಿರತೆಯ ಮೈ ಮೇಲೆ ಮುಳ್ಳು ಪರಿಚಿದ ಒಂದೇ ಒಂದು ಗಾಯವು ಕಾಣುತ್ತಿಲ್ಲ…
ಕಾನೂನು ಪ್ರಕಾರ ಕಾಡು ಹಂದಿ ಹಿಡಿಯಲು ಉರುಳು ಹಾಕುವುದು ನಿಷೇಧಿತ. ಇಂತಹ ಉರುಳು ಹಾಕಲು ಅವಕಾಶವಿಲ್ಲದಿದ್ದರೂ ಅರಣ್ಯ ಇಲಾಖೆ ಕ್ರಮ ಕೈಗೊಳ್ಳದಿರುವುದನ್ನು ಸ್ಥಳೀಯರು ಪ್ರಶ್ನಿಸಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ಈ ರೀತಿಯಾಗಿ ಕಾಡು ಪ್ರಾಣಿಗಳು ಸಾಯುತ್ತಿದ್ದರೆ, ಅದರ ಜವಾಬ್ದಾರಿಯನ್ನು ಯಾರು ಹೊರುವರು ಎಂಬ ಪ್ರಶ್ನೆ ಎದ್ದಿದೆ.
ಧಾರೇಶ್ವರ ಸೇರಿದಂತೆ ಸುತ್ತಮುತ್ತಲಿನ ಪ್ರದೇಶದಲ್ಲಿ ಚಿರತೆ ಹಾಗೂ ಚಿರತೆ ಮರಿಗಳು ಈಗಲೂ ಸಂಚರಿಸುತ್ತಿರುವ ಮಾಹಿತಿ ಸ್ಥಳೀಯರಿಂದ ಬಂದಿದೆ. ಇಂತಹ ಘಟನೆಗಳು ಮತ್ತೆ ಮರುಕಳಿಸದಂತೆ ಅರಣ್ಯ ಇಲಾಖೆ ತಕ್ಷಣ ಕ್ರಮ ಕೈಗೊಳ್ಳಬೇಕೆಂದು ಗ್ರಾಮಸ್ಥರು ಆಗ್ರಹಿಸಿದ್ದಾರೆ.
ಚಿರತೆ ಉರುಳಿಗೆ ಸಿಲುಕಿರುವ ವಿಡಿಯೋ ಕೂಡಾ ಸಾಮಾಜಿಕ ಜಾಲತಾಣಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ವೈರಲ್ ಆಗಿದ್ದು, ಅರಣ್ಯ ಇಲಾಖೆ ನಿಜವಾದ ಅಪರಾಧಿಗಳನ್ನು ಪತ್ತೆ ಹಚ್ಚಿ ಸೂಕ್ತ ಕ್ರಮ ಕೈಗೊಳ್ಳಬೇಕೆಂದು ಸಾರ್ವಜನಿಕರು ಒತ್ತಾಯಿಸಿದ್ದಾರೆ.
Kumta Leopard Cub Dies After Being Trapped in Wild Boar Snare, Locals Blame Forest Department Negligence
Kumta: A case of alleged forest department negligence has surfaced in Devagiri Gram Panchayat limits of Kumta taluk, after a leopard cub was found dead two days ago, reportedly caught in a snare set up to trap wild boars.
According to locals, a female leopard and her cub had been frequently spotted roaming in the area over the past few days. Meanwhile, wild boars have been entering farmlands, causing extensive crop damage. In an attempt to prevent further losses, some individuals are said to have illegally set up snares to capture the wild boars. Unfortunately, the leopard cub got trapped and died.
However, forest officials have reportedly claimed that the cub died after getting entangled in a barbed wire fence. Villagers have strongly contested this explanation, pointing out that the carcass bore no injuries consistent with barbed wire entanglement.
As per wildlife protection laws, setting up snares to trap wild animals, including wild boars, is strictly prohibited. Locals have criticized the forest department for failing to enforce these laws and prevent such illegal activities.
“This is not the first time incidents like this have occurred. If such traps are allowed to remain, who will take responsibility for the deaths of protected wildlife?” questioned local residents.
Reports indicate that leopards and their cubs are still being sighted in Dhareśhwar and surrounding areas. Villagers have urged the forest department to take immediate action to prevent such tragedies in the future.
A video of the leopard cub caught in the snare has gone viral on social media, sparking outrage. The public has demanded that the forest department identify and take strict action against those responsible for setting up the illegal traps.
